Proclippath Using Different Different Video Editing Techniques for Best Creativity

In order to master the art of editing, let us understand the various types of cut used when editing a film or a video. These 9 essential cuts can be used in any form of editing session for example, commercial, documentary, narrative, film, animation or industrial.

1. The Standard Cut

The standard cut, also known as the hard cut is the most basic cut and is used to cut from one clip to another without any transition. This cut hardly gives any visual meaning to the video. To use this cut, jump from the end of one clip to the beginning of another.

2. Jump Cut

Jump cut is used to jump from one clip to another to make the video interesting for the audience. For example, if you shoot an interview from different angles, you might use the jump cuts to jump from one angle to another in order to keep your audience interested.  This is one of the most used cuts after the hard cut.

3. L Cut

The L cut is a great editing technique to communicate a deeper meaning or to give a context to a conversation. In the L cut, we hear the audio from the previous clip while the visual has been changed to another shot. For example, the clip B is playing but the audio that you are hearing is from clip A. The L cut is a favorite among documentary filmmakers and commercial videographers.
This cut gives the audience special information and keeps the film flowing naturally.

4. J Cut

J cut is the opposite of L cut. In the J cut, you hear the audio from the next seen while visual has not been changed yet. For example, clip A is playing visually but you are hearing audio from clip B. This cut is also used to give the audience additional visual information to support the dialogues that are being said. The L cut is often used when you are filming an interview. And it is a favorite among documentary filmmakers and videographers.

5. Cutting on Action

Cutting on action is when you cut from one shot to another and match the action of the shots.
It is mostly used in filming action scenes. While using cutting on action, it is better to cut in mid-action rather than waiting for a pause to cut. This gives a better transition between scenes and makes a well tensed action scene. However, this cut can also be used for a light action scene.

6. Cutaways

Cutaway is when you cut to a shot away from the main subject. It is show what is happening outside the environment of the main subject. Cutaways help you establish or emphasize certain important details and also allow you to add meaning to scenes. Cutaways are often used during filming dialogue scenes.

7. Cross-Cut

Cross-cut is a one of the best but most difficult of all cuts. A cross-cut is used to showcase two different stories simultaneously. It is used by cutting between two different scenes that are happening at the same time but in different places. This is why this technique is also known as parallel editing.
You need to be very careful while using cross-cuts to tell the multiple story lines. If the cuts are not made properly, they might ruin the whole flow of the story as the audience would not understand what is going on.

8. Montage

The montage is rapid cuts of shots, either used to convey the passage of time or to give a context to the narrative. For example, if you want to build tension in a scene, you may use montage (rapid cuts) of all the characters’ faces or actions. The montage works perfectly when you want to heighten tension or carry the audience through a passage of time.

9. Match Cut

The match cut is used to match two different or opposite scenes together. When you need to move the narrative forward but need a way to tie two different shots together, you may use a match cut. For example, a child running on a road may transition to a grownup running on the track (to show the transition of time). The match cut has been used for many years and is an effective way to keep the flow of the narrative going without causing disorientation to the scene.
